Introduction
When it comes to getting out on the trails, derestricting your ebike can take your ride from good to great. The issue is, new ebike motors such as the Bosch Smart System have become more complex, with advanced features and technology.
Great for tech-savvy riders that want to monitor their ride through their iPhone. But, not so good for those that want to derestrict their ride using an ebike tuning kit.
Gone are the days of moving the magnet on your rear wheel. Bypassing the speed limit with a bit of DIY.
Since the Bosch Smart System launched in 2022, we've tested every tuning kit on the market. Some worked great, others not so much. With the introduction of over-the-air software updates, it's been a challenge for brands like Speedbox, VOLspeed and PearTune to keep up.
As we mentioned in the beginning, ebike tuning has become more complicated. That's why it's super important to understand what motor you have before making a purchase.
The VOLspeed for Bosch Smart System works with any ebike fitted an LED remote or system controller (see diagram below). Note, this ebike tuning kit not compatible with Smart bikes fitted with the 'Rim Magnet' sensor located on the rear wheel valve.
VOLspeed for Bosch Smart System Benefits
The VOLspeed Bosch Smart System is a plug & ride ebike tuning kit. It allows you to increase your bike's speed limit up to 28mph (45kmh). It can be switched on or off using your controls. It works with ebikes fitted with and without displays.
Installation Process
Installation is a breeze with this ebike tuning kit. Designed as a plug-and-play device, it connects directly to your Bosch Smart System without the need for any complex tools or technical know-how. This easy to follow installation process makes it an attractive option for riders who may not be mechanically inclined. Once fitted, you simply press the button sequence to activate the chip and choose your desired max speed.
For bike's without a display, you must use the Flow app to act as your display when setting it up for the first time.
Performance Enhancements
Once installed, the performance improvements are immediately noticeable. After a simple activation on the handlebar controls (- + - +). The VOLspeed removes the standard 25 km/h (15 mp/h) speed limit, allowing you to reach higher speeds (up to 45km/h or 28mp/h). It's worth noting that while this can lead to a more exhilarating ride, it's crucial to adhere to local laws regarding e-bike speed limits.
Plug & Ride Tuning
The real magic of the VOLspeed tuner is that it's so easy to use. Riders can switch it on or off at anytime using the handlebar controls. In addition, they can adjust the speed settings on the move within a few taps. It also works great if your eBike doesn't have a display as everything can be set using the flow mobile app.
Battery Life
While you may experience a reduction in battery range due to higher speeds and increased power usage. The VOLspeed tuning kit allows you easily adjust your speed to help optimise battery life depending on what type of ride you're doing.
Durability and Quality
In terms of build quality, the VOLspeed impresses. Made in Germany, it's built using quality materials. The design itself has been well thought out, with long cables to ensure it can be securely fitted without specialist tools or skills.
User Feedback
Since it's launch in 2023, feedback for this ebike tuning kit have been very positive (check them out for yourself here). Here's a snippet:
Pricing
It's well priced at £189, other brands start at around £199. Whilst it doesn't have the Bluetooth capabilities of the new Speedbox 1.1 B.Tuning. You're getting a reliable tuning kit that's simple to use and won't break the bank.
Should you buy one?
If you own an eBike fitted with a Bosch Smart System (excluding rim magnet) then you should definitely consider this ebike tuning kit. It's competitively priced but most importantly, it's reliable.
Overall we think think this is a superb ebike tuning kit for the Bosch smart system motor. VOLspeed have quickly become one of the most trusted brands in the market. They even include a 2-year warranty on each product for added peace of mind. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
As a reminder, this ebike tuner does not work with any eBikes with the rim magnet speed sensor (located on the rear wheel valve)

In this blog post we're going to discuss how to derestrict eBikes with a Yamaha motors. We will run through the different options for all of the current models including the latest PW-X3 found on the flagship Haibikes. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty and are only to be used on private land.
Important: none of the tuning kits we discuss below are compatible with YDX, Crossconnect or Urbanrush models.
How to find the correct tuning chip for my Yamaha motor?
Yamaha has been producing eBike motors since 2014. With nearly a dozen different versions it’s tricky to know exactly which motor your eBike has. We highly recommend looking at the specifications provided in your manual or a simple google search to find your specific model online.
The different motors can be put into 2 buckets:
PW-X, PW-X2, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE, PW-SE (typically found on eBikes produced from 2017-2022)
PW-X3 & PW-S2 (typically found on eBikes produced from 2022 onwards)
If you’ve already bought a 2023 model or are thinking about taking the leap, it’s highly likely your eBike will have either a PW-X3 or S2 motor. Both of these motors are considerably lighter than their predecessors (up to 300 grams). With the main difference being the power output. The X3 produces 85nm of torque which is in line with Bosch’s CX motor, whereas the PW-S2 has 75nm.
Now you’ve identified what motor you have, let’s dive in to our recommendations.
Best tuning kit for Yamaha PW-X, PW-X2, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE, PW-SE
We recommend this tuning kit as it allows you to easily set a new max speed limit on your ebike up to 45kmh. This is a brilliant feature as it keeps you in control of the speed and gives you flexibility as it can be adjusted at any time. This is a plug & ride tuning kit that will automatically switch off each time you turn your eBike off. It even gives you full use of your ebike’s display in mph or kmh.
One thing to note is that some installations may require the crank arm to be removed. This may require specialist tools and experience. After installing the chip, simply press the button sequence to set your new max speed limit (up to 45kmh).
It’s compatible with any of these motors; PW-X, PW-X2, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE, PW-SE.
The reason why we recommend the VOLspeed over the Speedbox is due to the latter having compatibility issues with the most recent firmware updates. The VOLspeed is fully tested on the most recent Yamaha firmware.
We recommend two options for these motors. Firstly, if your eBike has the Display A Side Switch (see below), we recommend the VOLspeed V3 PW-X3/S2.
Just like the version we discussed previously, this tuning kit gives you a custom derestriction up to 45kmh (28mph). It’s plug & ride and can be adjusted at any time using the buttons on the display. After installing the tuning kit, you’ll just need to press a short button sequence to activate the chip and set your max speed.
It’s compatible with any eBike with one of these motors; PW-X3 or PW-S2
If your eBike is fitted with Interface X, we recommend the Speedbox 3.1 instead. Whilst the VOLspeed is compatible with Interface X, due to it not having a display it can be tricky to set your custom max speed.
Unlike the VOLspeed, the Speedbox operates with a simple on/off derestriction. This makes it very user friendly with this particular controller. Once active, the Speedbox removes the factory speed limit entirely. The chip itself is installed directly to the motor. Once fitted, you simply press either your light button or Up/Down/Up/Down to activate it. The chip can be switched off at any time by pressing the same sequence again. The Speedbox 3.1 gives you a true plug & ride experience.
It’s compatible with any eBike with one of these motors; PW-X3 or PW-S2
All of the tuning kits we’ve discussed require a connection to the motor. This can be tricky for some as can require specialist tools like a crank puller and some mechanical experience. If you have an older eBike (pre 2022) then it’s worth considering the BadassBox too.
The BadassBox Yamaha is clipped externally to the chainstay of the bike. These kits use magnets to alter the speed sensor and as a result, do not give you accurate speed/distance readings. Instead, they will increase the maximum speed on the eBike to approximately double (50kmh).
Please note that these are only compatible with eBikes that have a Yamaha motor and a speed sensor exactly like this one below
Does this affect my eBike’s warranty? It’s important to understand that installing a third party device onto your ebike can potentially void your warranty.
All of our tuning chips are available to order from our UK warehouse. We ship worldwide and accept GBP, EUR, USD, AUD, CAD.

In this blog post we explain how you can derestrict your eBike fitted with a Shimano motor using a tuning chip. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty. eBikes with the speed restriction removed are illegal and only for use on private land.
Step 1: What motor do I have?
Before you jump in to ordering any tuning chip. You need to know exactly what Shimano motor your ebike has. Shimano has many versions of its motors so it’s important to check first.
Google is your friend here. Search for your exact ebike make, model and year and check the specs from any reputable ebike shop.
Here’s a breakdown of the main Shimano motors:
EP8/EP800 - Shimano’s high powered 85nm motor found on many of the flagship models from 2022 onwards.
E8000, E7000, E6100, E5000 - These have been around from 2016. They share the same internal systems and ports. The only difference being the power output and weight.
Step 2: What ports do I have?
Okay, so you’ve managed to find what motor you’ve got. Congrats, you’re one step closer to derestricting your ebike!
Next job involves a bit of manual labour. You’ll need to do this anyway to fit your tuning chip so get the practice in now.
Remove your motor cover to check the ports, you’ll see something like this:
As you can see in the example above, there's one spare port in the middle. If you have the same setup you will need the “standard” version of any of the tuning chips we recommend below.
If your motor doesn’t have a spare port, it will look like this example below.
For these, you’ll need the “+ETP” version of any of the tuning chips we recommend below.
Completed Steps 1 & 2?
Congrats! Nearly time to crack open a cold one, you’ve almost completed the mission. Now it’s time for the fun part…
Step 3: Choosing your Tuning Chip
Best Tuning Chip for EP8/EP800 (not E8000, scroll down for that one)
Released at the end of 2022, the Speedbox 1.3 connects to any EP8, EP800 or EP8RS motor in a few minutes.
This chip completely removes your ebike’s restriction. Whether you have a 15mph or 20mph factory limit.
This premium bluetooth version connects to the Speedbox App (available on iPhone & Android). Here, you can easily control everything using your smartphone.
You get heaps of advanced features. Our favourites being: custom max speed, motor lock & invisible mode. By choosing the bluetooth version, you get lifetime access to the Speedbox App. This allows you to use your phone as an auxiliary display, and track your rides in real-time.
Not bothered about these features? Go for the basic version with it's simple on/off functionality.
This chip works with a variety of motors (E8000, E7000, E6100, E5000). It can be installed in a few minutes - giving you a true plug & ride experience.
The Speedbox 1.2 completely removes your ebike’s restriction. Whether you have a 15mph or 20mph factory limit.
The reason why we love the Bluetooth version is for ease of use. You can control everything using your smartphone in just a few taps. Plus, all the advanced features. Including; customisable max speed, motor lock, invisible mode and real-time ride tracking.
If the Bluetooth version is a bit over budget or you’re not fussed on the advanced features. Don’t fret. There’s a basic version. No Bluetooth connection - just basic on/off tuning.
IMPORTANT: If your lights are inactive. The Speedbox will be permanently active once fitted.
REALLY IMPORTANT: Before placing your order, select the right version (Standard or +ETP). Scroll back up to step 2.
Conclusion
So there you have it, our 3 step process to derestricting your ebike. Piece of cake right?
If you're looking for the most advanced tuning chip with heaps of features. Choose the Speedbox 1.2 or 1.3 B.Tuning (remember, select 'standard' if you have a spare port or '+ETP' if you don’t).
If you haven't quite got the budget or not bothered about the advanced features, go for the basic version.
Our tuning chips are available to order from our UK warehouse. We ship worldwide and accept GBP, USD, AUD, CAD.

In this blog post we are going to review the Speedbox 1.0 tuning chip for Bosch Smart System eBikes. This tuning chip comes in two versions; Standard or B.Tuning, we will compare both, explain the differences and give you our recommendation.
Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty, derestricted eBikes are illegal and only to be used on private land.
IMPORTANT: Currently there are no tuning kits available for Bosch Smart Bikes fitted with the Speed Sensor on the rear wheel valve (Bosch Rim Magnet).
If you own one of these, register your interest here and we'll keep you up to date with new product releases.
How to know if your eBike has a Bosch smart system?
If you are unsure whether your ebike has a Bosch Smart System, all you need to do is check your spec. If you see the spec below you have a Bosch Smart System, if your ebike has a Purion, Kiox or Intuvia display then you do not have the Bosch Smart System (check out our other post).
On the specifications you'll see the following;
1. LED Remote on the handlebar or System Controller & Mini Remote
2. Connected to Bosch Flow Smartphone App
3. Kiox 300 or Intuvia 100 Display (some models do not have displays)
Speedbox 1.0 Standard or B.Tuning?
The key difference between the two Speedbox 1.0’s is that the B.Tuning version has Bluetooth integrated. Both versions are fitted in the same way and offer the exact same performance, however, the B.Tuning has lots of other cool features which we will now discuss.
1. Set a new max on your ebike - this is an all new feature and only available on the bluetooth version. The standard version allows riders to remove the 25km/h limit only.
2. Enable invisible mode to prevent unauthorised use
3. Accurate ride data in real-time via the Speedbox app. Data is taken directly from the ebike motor
Will the Speedbox 1.0 harm my motor?
The Speedbox 1.0 for Bosch Smart System has been tested extensively prior to launch. Like all Speedbox tuning chips, this one is undetectable. What this means is that won’t appear on any reports if you were to take your ebike in for a service.
Riders can turn the Speedbox 1.0 off at any time using the LED controller or app (if using B.Tuning). When using your derestricted ebike on private land, you will find that it’s actually pretty difficult to reach excessive speeds unless you have a set of very fast feet, however 32-45km/h is achievable.
We haven’t had any reports of the Speedbox 1.0 causing excessive wear or damage to the motor.
If you’re concerned about this, we advise choosing the B.Tuning version due to the speed setting functionality.
Will the Bosch Smart System detect the Speedbox?
As mentioned above, both of these tuning chips are completely undetectable. Bosch have implemented anti-tuning detection on their ebike drive systems since 2020, this is why tuning chips like the Speedbox and VOLspeed have grown in popularity.
They offer a far more reliable solution compared to a few years ago when you could adjust the magnet slightly on your rear wheel to alter the speed limit.
The Speedbox is able to bypass the anti-tuning detection by running a short countdown at the end of your ride. This ensures that your ebike is recording the true distance and prevents skewed readings being sent to the computer - which will likely cause a tuning error.
Riders can minimise the risk of triggering an error by simply letting their display shut itself down on completion of the ride.
Verdict
Speedbox have been manufacturing tuning chips for all of the major ebike motors for the last 5 years. All of their chips come with original connectors and meet high standards of quality control to give customers peace of mind - these ebikes are an expensive toy afterall.
If you're looking for the most complete tuning chip for your Bosch Smart System ebike we highly recommend the SpeedBox 1.0 B.Tuning.
It’s slightly more expensive than the basic version, but we feel the additional features we discussed earlier present great value for money for riders.
If you're not too fussed about the speed setting feature or app integration, go for the standard SpeedBox 1.0. Performance-wise it's exactly the same, you just give up all the additional features.
Both of these tuning chips are available to order now

In this blog post we are going to review theVOLspeed V4tuning chip for 2022 Giant Trance X or Reign E+ eBikes fitted with Syncdrive Pro 85nm motors. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty, derestricted eBikes are illegal and only to be used on private land.
Compatibility
The VOLspeed V4 tuning chip is an updated version designed specifically for the 2022 Giant Syncdrive Pro 85nm motor, commonly found on the 2022 Trance X or Reign E+.
Benefits
- Plug & Ride with no programming required
- Simple activation via the handlebar controls
- Full use of Speed/Distance on your display
- Option to set an activation code to prevent unauthorised use
Plug & Ride
The key difference between the new V4 & old V3 is that the new version requires no initial programming. This is great news for riders that want a plug & play solution, removing the chances of any human error during setup. Over the last 18 months we found that many riders found the initial programming on the V3 a little bit confusing which resulted in delays with setting it up.
Tamper Detection
The majority of errors are caused by riders consistently exceeding a high speed limit (>45km/h). As a result the V4 will only allow you to set a new max speed up to 45km/h. VOLspeed have also improved the anti-tuning technology to reduce the chance of errors further, even on the most recent software update.
Verdict
VOLspeed are regarded as one of the most reliable tuning chips for the Bosch motor. This new version now brings all of those popular features across to Giant owners. This is now a true plug & ride solution, giving riders full use of their display & ride control app with the added benefit of an increased max speed capped at 45kmh.

How To Derestrict a Giant eBike in 2024
In this blog post we are going to discuss how to derestrict a Giant eBike. We will run through the different options for 2017-2023 models including the latest Syncdrive Pro2 motor found on the Trance X and Reign E+. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty and are only to be used on private land.
(Last updated 16th June 2023)
How to find the correct tuning chip for my Giant eBike?
We’re going to run through the best options for all of the main Giant motors from 2017 onwards. The best way to check what motor you have is to take a look at the specifications provided in your manual or online. You’ll notice that each motor has a different level of torque (nm). Here are the most common examples;
Giant Trance X & Reign E+ with Syncdrive Pro2 (85nm)
Giant Stance E+ 2023 with Syncdrive Sport (75nm)
Giant Road E+ & Explore E+ with Syncdrive Pro (80nm), Life, Core
Giant Fathom E+ with Syncdrive Sport (70nm)
Best tuning chip for Giant Trance X & Reign E+ eBikes (2022-23) or Stance E+ (2023 onwards)
The reason why we recommend this tuning chip is that not only does it remove the 25km/h speed restriction but it allows you to easily set a new max speed limit on your ebike. This is a brilliant feature as it keeps you in control of the speed and gives you flexibility as it can be adjusted at any time. The V4 version is a true plug & play solution that doesn't require any initial programming, it also gives you full use of the bike’s display. After installing the chip, simply press the button sequence to set your new max speed limit (up to 45kmh). It’s compatible the 85nm Syncdrive Pro2 motor or 75nm Syncdrive Sport.
The Speedbox 3.1 B.Tuning for Giant is the most advanced tuning kit on the market for these models. It's the perfect solution for bikes without displays as it can be controlled easily via your iPhone or Android device.
Best tuning chip for Syncdrive Pro (80nm), Life, Sport & Core motors (2017-2023)
We recommend two options for these motors. Firstly, if your Giant has a display fitted, we recommend the VOLspeed V4 Giant. It's a true plug & play solution that doesn't require any initial programming, it also gives you full use of the bike’s display. After installing the chip, simply press the button sequence to set a new max speed limit (up to 45kmh).
If your Giant doesn't have a display fitted then our recommendation is the Speedbox 3.0 B.Tuning for Giant. It is installed in exactly the same way as the VOLspeed but has a heap of advanced features including a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone. This enables you to control everything via your phone, including custom speed, motor lock, invisible tuning and you can even track all your rides in real-time - perfect for those that want to monitor their progress!
Please note you will need these tools to fit it;
Allen Key 2.5 / 3 / 8
Torx Key TX25
Crank Puller
Alternatives?
As you will have read above, both the VOLspeed and Speedbox are fitted directly to the motor and will require the correct tools in order to do so. If you’re not comfortable installing these yourself, there are other tuning options available for a select number of Giant Syncdrive motors.
The BadassBox Giant is an excellent option for those that want to increase their speed without having to install directly to the motor. The key difference between this and the VOLspeed or Speedbox is that they fit externally to the ebike’s frame. As a result, it will result in inaccurate speed readings on the display or RideControl app.
Please note this BadassBox is only compatible with Giant ebikes fitted with the ‘pin shaped’ speed sensor on the chainstay (see above)
If your Giant ebike has the integrated speed sensor (see below) then you will need this variant of the BadassBox Giant 2020-21
Does this affect my warranty?
It’s important to understand that installing a third party device onto your ebike can potentially void your warranty. However, the options we have discussed above are not detectable and are safe for your ebike. All of them are fully tested on the latest software versions.
Conclusion
To conclude, we recommend the VOLspeed V4 or Speedbox 3.1 B.Tuning for the latest Syncdrive Pro motors including the 2023 Syncdrive Pro2 found on the Trance X or Reign E+.
For older models (2017-21), our recommendations are the Speedbox 3.0, VOLspeed V4 or Speedbox 3.0 B.Tuning. If you would like to check out all of the options, check out the links below.
Syncdrive Pro2 85nm & Syncdrive Sport 75nm (2023 onwards)

How To Derestrict a Specialized eBike in 2024?
In this blog post we are going to explain how you can derestrict your Specialized eBike using a tuning chip. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can potentially void your warranty, eBikes with the speed restriction removed are illegal and only to be used on private land.

What motor do I have?
Before we jump in to the different tuning chips for Specialized eBikes we need to establish what motor you have on your eBike. Specialized use a variety of different motors on their eBikes so it's important to understand exactly what one you have first.
Here's a breakdown of the different motors:
Brose 1.2/1.2E/1.3/1.3E Motor
This motor is typically found on Specialized Turbo Levo Hardtail (2021), Turbo Kenevo Comp or older Specialized Levo models (pre 2019).
Mahle 1.1/1.2 SL Motor
You'll find this motor on lightweight Specialized eMTBs & e-Road bikes such as Turbo Levo SL & Vado SL 5.0. Weighing just 1.95 kg it's the lightest of the all the motors, delivering power of 240 W and 35 Nm of torque.
Brose 2.1/2.2 Motor
The 2.1 motor is based on the Brose S-Mag, it's one of the most popular motors for Specialized eBikes. It weighs 2.9 kg but with that brings power of 565 W and 90 Nm of torque. You'll find this motor fitted to Specialized Turbo Levo's (2019-2022).
Brose 2.0 Motor
Brose's 2.0 motor is the latest iteration of the 2.1. It was released at the end of 2021 and has received a minor update to it's software as well as a new drive belt. It has the same power and torque as it's predecessor with 565 and 90 respectively. This motor can be found on the latest 2024 Turbo Levo models.
Best Tuning Chip for Specialized eBikes with 1.2/1.2E/1.3/1.3E motors
Our #1 pick for this motor comes from Speedbox. Manufactured in the Czech Republic, this chip was released in Spring 2023 and received a significant upgrades with the previous 1.0 version. Here's some of our favourite features:
Accurate speed readings when riding derestricted
Simple activation via WALK or +/-
Set a custom max speed (perfect if you want to preserve battery but can be tricky to set if you have the older TCU)
Want more? Speedbox have also released a premium bluetooth version, giving you the option to control everything via your smartphone - definitely worth a look here
Our #1 pick for 1.1 SL Mahle motor comes from Levociraptor. This Gen2 version was released a couple of years ago but still works on the latest 2023 models. The tuning options for the 1.1 SL motor are limited due to the design of these eBikes, many of which are e-Road bikes. The key benefits of this chip is that it's plug & ride and is simple to install. The only downside being that it won't give accurate speed or distance on your display or mission control, however you can use the third party BLevo app via a bluetooth integration if you need this function.
Best Tuning Chip for Specialized eBikes with 2.1/2.2/2.0 Motors
Our top pick for Specialized eBikes with either 2.1/2.2/2.0 Brose motors. The Speedbox 3 B.Tuning is the most advanced tuning chip on the market for Specialized riders.
You get all of the features we mentioned above in the 1.2/1.3 section plus all of this:
Set a custom max speed via the Speedbox App (great if you have the older TCU)
One click tuning control via the Speedbox App
Motor Lock
Invisible Tuning
Trip tracking & diagnostics (again, great if you don’t have a display with readouts)
By opting for the B.Tuning version of this chip, you receive lifelong access to the Speedbox app. It's completely free to use and gives riders the simplest way to control their tuning kit, customise max speed & track rides.
As you will have read above, the Speedbox 3.0 B. Tuning really is the pick of the bunch when it comes to derestricting a Specialized ebike. You'll be pleased to hear that the chip is also compatible with a few lesser known motor types including the S-Mag & S - winner winner
Conclusion
As you can see there are lots of options when it comes to Specialized tuning, we hope you found this blog post helpful.
If you're looking for the most advanced tuning chip with heaps of features then the Speedbox 3.0 B.Tuning is your #1 pick. If you haven't quite got the budget, go for the standard version as you're still getting best-in-class features (not compatible with 1.1 SL motors)
All of our tuning chips are available to order from our UK warehouse. We ship worldwide and accept GBP, USD, AUD, CAD.

In this blog post we are going to review theVOLspeed V4tuning chip and explain the main differences compared to the V3 version. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty, derestricted eBikes are illegal and only to be used on private land.
Compatibility
The VOLspeed V4 tuning chip is an updated version of the hugely successful V3 model. It is compatible with a variety Bosch eBikes from 2014-22. Please note it is not compatible with the 'Smart System' models releasing at the end of the year.
Benefits
- Plug & Ride with no programming required
- Simple activation via the minus button
- Full use of Speed/Distance on your display
- Option to set an activation code to prevent unauthorised use
- Advanced programming available to optimise your performance
V4 vs V3 Comparison
Plug & Ride
The key difference between the V4 & V3 is that the new version requires no initial programming. This is great news for riders that want a plug & play solution, removing the chances of any human error during setup. Over the last 18 months we found that many riders found the initial programming on the V3 a little bit confusing which resulted in delays with setting it up.
Tamper Detection
The V3 was the most reliable tuning chip on the market, resulting in very few 504 (anti-tuning) errors. The majority of errors are caused by riders consistently exceeding a high speed limit (>45km/h). As a result the V4 will only allow you to set a new max speed from 25-45km/h. VOLspeed have also improved the anti-tuning technology to reduce the chance of errors further, even on the most recent software update.
Advanced Programming
Assistance levels can now be configured on each ride mode (Eco, Tour, eMTB, Turbo) which can be activated during your ride. A total of 4 different support settings are available within each ride mode.
The table above shows the level of motor support in each of the ride modes. As you can see by activating alternative mode on the V4 it enables the motor to produce slightly more support in each mode. Alternative mode is activated during your ride, with the V4 active simply press the WALK button twice in your chosen ride mode and 12 km/h will appear on your display. You can even go one step further and manually adjust the eMTB and Tour+ ride modes if you really want to. The V4 also comes with a detailed instruction manual for those that want to test out all the features available.
Verdict
The VOLspeed V3 was our top pick for the Bosch motor last year so was always going to be tough to beat. The V4 does come in slightly more expensive than the previous version but we think these improvements make it worth it. Not only is it the most reliable but it now has the more features and is plug & ride.

VOLspeed V3 for Bosch Gen4 Review
Update (25/04/2022) - The VOLspeed V3 has now been replaced by the V4. Check out our review here
In this blog post we are going to review theVOLspeed V3tuning chip. This chip is used to derestrict an eBike with a Bosch motor and works on any model from 2014-2021 including Gen4 Performance Line CX. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty, derestricted eBikes are illegal and only to be used on private land.
VOLspeed V3 for Bosch Gen4
There are a variety of different tuning chips available for the Bosch Gen4 motor. In this section we are going to discuss the VOLspeed V3 tuning chip.
The VOLspeed V3 tuning chip is a great option for Bosch eBike owners. It is compatible with all Bosch eBikes from 2014 - 2021 meaning that it can be used on a huge variety of different Bosch motors. Good news if you are currently on a 2018 Bosch Active Line but have plans to upgrade to Gen 4 in the future!
Features
- Easily set a new max speed
- Simple activation by pressing minus for 3 seconds
- 100% waterproof
- Full use of speed and range calculation on your display
- Option to set an activation code to prevent unauthorised use
- Detailed instructions provided
Installation & Setup
Now one thing that can be particularly daunting for eBike owners is installing the device. Fortunately installing these on eBikes with Gen4 Bosch motors only requires a basic toolkit and some patience if you have a particularly tight motor housing (Whyte e160 owners will know all about this!). Please note, installation on the Gen3 Active Line does require a crank removal so do bear this in mind prior to purchasing.
In terms of setup, it's very straight forward. The instruction manual walks through process from start to finish with some helpful images! After connecting the chip to your motor you will have to begin the initial setup. This part involves pressing the minus & plus button on your display. It will then run through a launch sequence, the good thing here is that if the sequence doesn't run exactly as it's described in the manual - you know you have it connected wrong!
Pro Tip: If you ride with your display in mp/h, switch it to km/h so it matches exactly with what's written in the manual.
Once the initial setup is complete, it's time to set your new max speed limit. This is a bit of a game changer for eBike tuning as it gives the rider complete control of the new max speed. You simply press minus for 3 seconds and then use your +/- to select your desired speed. The beauty of this feature is that it caters for all types of rider. For example if you have a 500wh battery and are concerned about battery consumption, you have the ability to give yourself a small increase in speed compared to a rider with a large battery who is more care-free.
One thing we haven't mentioned here is that the VOLspeed also has the option of setting an activation code. This isn't a feature we have tested ourselves however we can see it being helpful for some riders. Essentially, you set a lock on the device so that it only activates once the correct button sequence has been pressed.
Should I buy one?
Overall we think the VOLspeed V3 is a superb tuning device for a Bosch motor, particularly for the new Gen4. Having tested this tuning chip extensively on both Gen4 and Gen3 motors we are extremely confident in it's ability to derestrict without throwing up a 504 (anti-tuning) error. In addition to this, we have tested it in wet conditions and had no electrical issues whatsoever. VOLspeed do claim it's 100% waterproof so hopefully that gives you piece of mind if you like riding in a bit of rain! All in all, it's a great piece of kit and the added feature of being able to set a new max speed limit is a game changer. It's a thumbs up for us! Lets us know what you think in the comments below!

In this blog post we'll explain how you can derestrict an eBike with a Bosch motor. We'll discuss everything you need to know about tuning chips for the standard Bosch motors found on any eBikes from 2014 to present.
Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty, eBikes with the speed restriction removed are illegal and only to be used on private land.
(Last updated 25th January 2024)
How does tuning a Bosch motor work?
Bosch motors are one of the most popular choices for eBike manufacturers. In recent years with the likes of Cube, Cannondale & Whyte have chosen it as their motor of choice for their eBikes. The Gen4 motor in particular is extremely powerful - it will tackle the steepest climb with ease. However, despite all the power the 25km/h speed restriction will kick in, meaning that on the flat terrain you will be pedalling against the motor, unable to go any faster. For many, 25km/h is enough speed for an eBike. However, for those of us that want to be able to ride a bit faster on private land, you will need a tuning chip. A tuning chip essentially removes the 25km/h speed restriction on your eBike and allows you to continue to pedal with assistance from your Performance Line CX motor.
VOLspeed or Speedbox?
There are a variety of different tuning chips available for Bosch motors. To save you the time, we're only discussing the two most popular eBike tuning chips; VOLspeed V4 & Speedbox 3.0. We are aware of other options available, however due to the similar price points and reliability of these particular options we believe that these are the best chips available for any Bosch motor, excluding Smart System models.
This tuning chip is compatible with all Bosch eBikes from 2014 onwards (excludes smart system). It's been incredible popular over the last few years, just check out all the amazing reviews here.
The reason why riders love this tuning chip so much is that not only does it remove the 25km/h speed restriction but it allows you to easily set a new max speed up to 45kmh (28mph).
This is a brilliant feature as it keeps you in control of the speed and gives you flexibility as it can be adjusted at anytime. The V4 version is now a true plug & play solution that doesn't require any initial programming. After installing the chip, simply press the minus button on your display for 3 seconds and select your new max speed limit (up to 45kmh). The VOLspeed V4 is compatible with all Bosch display units; Purion, Nyon, Kiox & Intuvia.
You can check this awesome installation video from Italjohn below
Speedbox are an eBike tuning OG, they have been around for many years and have the best selection of tuning chips available for all of the major eBike motors (check out the full range here). In January 2020, the Speedbox 3.0 was released. Due to Bosch implementing new anti-tuning measures, the company completely updated their Bosch tuning kit to give riders a reliable solution that was simple to use.
As you can see from the photos, the VOLspeed V4 and Speedbox 3.0 are very similar in looks. Both tuning chips connect in exactly the same way offering a true play & play solution. To activate the Speedbox, simply press the 'Walk' button on your handlebar control and 9.9km/h (6.1mp/h) will appear, meaning the tuning chip is active and the 25km/h restriction is removed. To turn the chip off, you simply press 'Walk' again and 2.5km/h (1.6mp/h) will appear.
The Speedbox 3.0 does allow you to set a new max speed however it is not done at the beginning of the installation and can be tricky to do compared to the VOLspeed. We find it easier to just stick to the simple on/off derestriction when using the Speedbox.
One key difference between the two tuning chips is that when using the Speedbox 3.0 on a Bosch Gen 4 motor, you are required to leave the eBike on after finishing a ride until the value of 0.0km/h appears on the display. This countdown is in place to prevent the eBike from recognising that a tuning chip has been fitted. During the countdown a timer will appear on the display, showing you how long left until it's complete. For best practice we recommend leaving the eBike to turn itself off once the countdown is finished. This only applies to Gen4 motors though, older Active or Performance Line motors can be switched off immediately.
Premium Option
If you're somebody that loves the latest technology and is often glued to your phone. Speedbox also have a premium bluetooth version. It comes with heaps of advanced features such as; tuning control, speed setting, motor lock, trip data & diagnostics, all via your iPhone or Android device.
Will a tuning chip cause my eBike to go into Limp Mode?
The dreaded 'Limp Mode' is one phrase that all riders with Bosch motors will be aware of. Essentially it is where the eBike shuts down and an error code 504 appears on your display. The 504 error appears when the Bosch motor detects that a tuning chip is fitted. The good news is that this error can be easily cleared by riding for 90 minutes unassisted or doing this clever drill hack. It's worth noting that the 504 error has been known to appear on eBikes WITHOUT tuning chips fitted. From experience we've found it very rare for an eBike to go into limp mode with a VOLspeed V4 or Speedbox 3.0 fitted. Many of the errors reported online are often from riders who have tried a DIY solution like tampering with their speed sensor or magnet.
If you set a sensible max speed of 40-45km/h on the VOLspeed V4 or follow the countdown each time on the Speedbox 3.0 you shouldn't have any problems.
Please note that whilst these tuning kits have a very high success rate, neither of them are 100% guaranteed. If you're unfortunate to get a 504 error, there is no need to panic, simply reset the eBike and you're good to go again.
It's worth pointing out again that fitting a third party device like a tuning kit to your eBike can potentially void your warranty. If your warranty is important to you, we recommend waiting for it to expire before considering a tuning kit.
What tuning chip should I choose?
So you've read through the details of each tuning chip and are now ready to make a decision. We have tested both of these tuning chips extensively and believe that both are excellent choices for the Bosch motor, including the Gen 4 Performance Line CX motor.
However, if we had to choose between the two, we would opt for the VOLspeed V4 for two reasons;
All of our tuning chips are available to order from our UK, US & Australian warehouses. We ship worldwide and accept GBP, EUR, USD, AUD, CAD.
Bosch Smart System Tuning Chips
The Bosch Smart System was released in 2022 and requires a different tuning chip from the options we have shared above. If you own an eBike equipped with the Bosch Smart System your options are more limited but there are some great solutions on the market today.
Please note: none of the tuning chips listed below are compatible with eBikes fitted with the Rim Magnet sensor, located on the rear-wheel valve. You can shop these here.
How to tell if I have a Bosch Smart System eBike?
You can easily tell if you have a Bosch Smart System eBike if it is fitted with an LED remote control. Many are fitted with a Kiox 300 or Intuvia 100 display. If your eBike has either a Purion, Intuvia or original Kiox. You have a non-smart model. You will be able to fit either the VOLspeed V4 or Speedbox 3.0 that we discussed earlier in this post.
The Speedbox 1.0 B.Tuning gives riders advanced features such as tuning control, motor lock, ride data & 'invisible mode' function - all via the Speedbox app (available on iPhone & Android)
World's smallest and most discreet tuning chip for the smart system. This chip connects to the speed sensor only, making so easy to install. Due to it's unique design it's perfect for eBikes that don't have much space inside the motor. This chip is preset to give riders a 40kmh derestriction.
The bestselling Bosch tuning chip is now available for the smart system. Like all VOLspeed chips, it allows a custom max speed up to 45kmh (28mph). The chip is plug & ride, it can be switched on or off using the handlebar controls. Check out our full review here
Newly updated for Autumn 2023, this new version is plug & play and limited to a max speed of 50kmh when active. Previous versions of this chip did not have a capped max speed which lead to some error codes.
How does tuning a Bosch Smart System eBike work?
All of these tuning chips fit directly to the motor with original connections. Once fitted, riders simply activate the chip each time they wish to ride derestricted. The sIMPLEk Pro Nano has the option of setting a permanent mode, it will automatically activate when the bike is powered on.
With some of these chips a short countdown will appear on the display after completing a ride. Riders can just let the display turn itself off to ensure that accurate distances are recorded.
Can I see accurate speed on my display or flow app?
Only the Speedbox & PearTune will show accurate speed in KMH only. When in use, the display shows the real speed up to 22.2 km/h. After exceeding this speed your actual speed is indicated on the last two digits of the display.
Example:
- 22.3 corresponds to a speed of 23 km/h
- 23.1 corresponds to a speed of 31 km/h
- 24.5 corresponds to a speed of 45km/h
If using the VOLspeed, the speed reading is fixed above 22kmh when riding derestricted.
The sIMPLEk does tracking speed but does require a small conversion, this is explained in detail here.
What are my chances of getting an error code?
Like with all tuning chips, nothing is 100% guaranteed. The Bosch Smart System is more advanced than the previous Bosch system so there is a higher chance of an error. That being said, riders can minimise the risk of triggering an error by following these steps;
- Switching off automatic updates on the flow app
- If you do update, always remove the chip beforehand (this is essential)
- Set a lower maximum speed between 40-45kmh
- Allow your display to turn itself off after each ride
If you do happen to trigger an error code, this can be cleared by riding the bike for 60-90 minutes in unassisted mode.
What tuning chip should I choose?
If you're looking for a chip that offers great performance, reliability and easy installation. We recommend theVOLspeed (check out our full review here), it allows a derestriction up to 45kmh (28mph). This has been set by the manufacturer to reduce the risk of error codes. However, riders can choose to increase the max speed if they wish.
This makes it a great option for any UK, EU or Australia riders who have a 25kmh factory speed limit. It also works on eBikes with 32kmh limits.
If you're looking for the most advanced features and smartphone compatibility. We highly recommend theSpeedBox 1.1 B.Tuning. This premium version allows riders to connect their eBike to the SpeedBox app (available on iPhone & Android) where they can control their tuning chip and see accurate ride data in real time.
It also gives you a tonne of advanced features like; custom speed, motor lock, invisible mode and real-time ride tracking.
It's also worth considering the sIMPLEk. It's so small & easy to fit, making it an excellent choice for riders that don't have much space inside the motor.
