How To Derestrict a Shimano eBike in 2024

In this blog post we explain how you can derestrict your eBike fitted with a Shimano motor using a tuning chip. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty. eBikes with the speed restriction removed are illegal and only for use on private land.

Step 1: What motor do I have?

Before you jump in to ordering any tuning chip. You need to know exactly what Shimano motor your ebike has. Shimano has many versions of its motors so it’s important to check first.

Google is your friend here. Search for your exact ebike make, model and year and check the specs from any reputable ebike shop.

Here’s a breakdown of the main Shimano motors:

EP8/EP800 - Shimano’s high powered 85nm motor found on many of the flagship models from 2022 onwards.

E8000, E7000, E6100, E5000 - These have been around from 2016. They share the same internal systems and ports. The only difference being the power output and weight.

Step 2: What ports do I have?

Okay, so you’ve managed to find what motor you’ve got. Congrats, you’re one step closer to derestricting your ebike!

Next job involves a bit of manual labour. You’ll need to do this anyway to fit your tuning chip so get the practice in now.

Remove your motor cover to check the ports, you’ll see something like this:

As you can see in the example above, there's one spare port in the middle. If you have the same setup you will need the “standard” version of any of the tuning chips we recommend below.

If your motor doesn’t have a spare port, it will look like this example below.

For these, you’ll need the “+ETP” version of any of the tuning chips we recommend below.

Completed Steps 1 & 2?

Congrats! Nearly time to crack open a cold one, you’ve almost completed the mission. Now it’s time for the fun part…

Step 3: Choosing your Tuning Chip

Speedbox 1.3 B.Tuning Chip for Shimano EP8

Released at the end of 2022, the Speedbox 1.3 connects to any EP8, EP800 or EP8RS motor in a few minutes.

This chip completely removes your ebike’s restriction. Whether you have a 15mph or 20mph factory limit.

This premium bluetooth version connects to the Speedbox App (available on iPhone & Android). Here, you can easily control everything using your smartphone.

You get heaps of advanced features. Our favourites being: custom max speed, motor lock & invisible mode. By choosing the bluetooth version, you get lifetime access to the Speedbox App. This allows you to use your phone as an auxiliary display, and track your rides in real-time.

Not bothered about these features? Go for the basic version with it's simple on/off functionality.

IMPORTANT: If your lights are inactive. The Speedbox will be permanently active once fitted.

REALLY IMPORTANT: Before placing your order. Select the right version (Standard or +ETP). Scroll back up to step 2 in case you’ve forgotten already.

This chip works with a variety of motors (E8000, E7000, E6100, E5000). It can be installed in a few minutes - giving you a true plug & ride experience.

The Speedbox 1.2 completely removes your ebike’s restriction. Whether you have a 15mph or 20mph factory limit.

The reason why we love the Bluetooth version is for ease of use. You can control everything using your smartphone in just a few taps. Plus, all the advanced features. Including; customisable max speed, motor lock, invisible mode and real-time ride tracking.

If the Bluetooth version is a bit over budget or you’re not fussed on the advanced features. Don’t fret. There’s a basic version. No Bluetooth connection - just basic on/off tuning.

I have a yeti 160e but don’t see where to remove the motor cover to find the ports. Do you have another video that shows me how to do that?

I have recently bought a MARIN Rift Zone E1 electric MTB

The motor fitted is the latest Shimano Steps EP6 Drive Unit , 250w, 85Nm

I can only find a tuning chip on your sight for the bigger EP8 and the older models E8000, E7000, E6100, E5000

My model is the newest model.

Can you advise if you have a tuning chip to suit?

I contacted Speedbox direct and they have not started on creating a chip yet for this model. So can you advise on another supplier?
