How To Derestrict a Specialized eBike in 2023?

Exclusive review: New sub 17 kg Specialized S-Works Levo SL 2020 with a brand new motor concept – a new way of riding bikes? | E-MOUNTAINBIKE Magazine

In this blog post we are going to explain how you can derestrict your Specialized eBike using a tuning chip. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can potentially void your warranty, eBikes with the speed restriction removed are illegal and only to be used on private land.

What motor do I have?

Before we jump in to the different tuning chips for Specialized eBikes we need to establish what motor you have on your eBike. Specialized use a variety of different motors on their eBikes so it's important to understand exactly what one you have first.

Here's a breakdown of the different motors:

Brose 1.2/1.2E/1.3/1.3E Motor

This motor is typically found on Specialized Turbo Levo Hardtail (2021), Turbo Kenevo Comp or older Specialized Levo models (pre 2019).

Mahle 1.1 SL Motor

You'll find this motor on lightweight Specialized eMTBs & e-Road bikes such as Turbo Levo SL & Vado SL 5.0. Weighing just 1.95 kg it's the lightest of the all the motors, delivering power of 240 W and 35 Nm of torque.

Brose 2.1/2.2 Motor

The 2.1 motor is based on the Brose S-Mag, it's one of the most popular motors for Specialized eBikes. It weighs 2.9 kg but with that brings power of 565 W and 90 Nm of torque. You'll find this motor fitted to Specialized Turbo Levo's (2019-2021).

Brose 2.0 Motor

Brose's 2.0 motor is the latest iteration of the 2.1. It was released at the end of 2021 and has received a minor update to it's software as well as a new drive belt. It has the same power and torque as it's predecessor with 565 and 90 respectively. This motor can be found on the latest 2023 Turbo Levo models.

Best Tuning Chip for Specialized eBikes with 1.2/1.2E/1.3/1.3E motors

Speedbox 3.0 Tuning Chip for Brose Specialized eBikes

Our #1 pick for this motor comes from Speedbox. Manufactured in the Czech Republic, this chip was released in Spring 2023 and received a significant upgrades with the previous 1.0 version. Here's some of our favourite features:

  • Accurate speed readings when riding derestricted
  • Simple activation via WALK or +/-
  • Set a custom max speed (perfect if you want to preserve battery but can be tricky to set if you have the older TCU)

Want more? Speedbox have also released a premium bluetooth version, giving you the option to control everything via your smartphone - definitely worth a look here

Best Tuning Chip for Specialized eBikes with 1.1 SL motors

Levociraptor Gen2 Tuning Chip for SL 1.1

Our #1 pick for 1.1 SL Mahle motor comes from Levociraptor. This Gen2 version was released a couple of years ago but still works on the latest 2023 models. The tuning options for the 1.1 SL motor are limited due to the design of these eBikes, many of which are e-Road bikes. The key benefits of this chip is that it's plug & ride and is simple to install. The only downside being that it won't give accurate speed or distance on your display or mission control, however you can use the third party BLevo app via a bluetooth integration if you need this function.

Best Tuning Chip for Specialized eBikes with 2.1/2.2/2.0 Motors

Speedbox 3.0 B.Tuning for Brose Specialized eBikes

Our top pick for Specialized eBikes with either 2.1/2.2/2.0 Brose motors. The Speedbox 3 B.Tuning is the most advanced tuning chip on the market for Specialized riders.

You get all of the features we mentioned above in the 1.2/1.3 section plus all of this:

  • Set a custom max speed via the Speedbox App (great if you have the older TCU)
  • One click tuning control via the Speedbox App
  • Motor Lock
  • Invisible Tuning
  • Trip tracking & diagnostics (again, great if you don’t have a display with readouts)

By opting for the B.Tuning version of this chip, you receive lifelong access to the Speedbox app. It's completely free to use and gives riders the simplest way to control their tuning kit, customise max speed & track rides.

Brose S Mag & Brose S Tuning Options

As you will have read above, the Speedbox 3.0 B. Tuning really is the pick of the bunch when it comes to derestricting a Specialized ebike. You'll be pleased to hear that the chip is also compatible with a few lesser known motor types including the S-Mag & S - winner winner

Conclusion

As you can see there are lots of options when it comes to Specialized tuning, we hope you found this blog post helpful.

If you're looking for the most advanced tuning chip with heaps of features then the Speedbox 3.0 B.Tuning is your #1 pick. If you haven't quite got the budget, go for the standard version as you're still getting best-in-class features (not compatible with 1.1 SL motors)

Hi Ebike Tuner

I am interested in the Speedbox 3.0 but have a few questions

Firstly i have a Specialized 5.0 turbo IGH WITH Brose 2.2 motor manufactured in 2022.

Can Specialized Mission Control display on the bike still be used to display information & still be used to configure the bike via the Specialized App

Will the Mission Control display on the bike still work once a Speedbox is installed, if yes will the Mission Control continue to display my true speed?

Can Specialized detect the Speedbox chip when they perform a system upgrade?
Your publication material says the chip is completely undetectable, what exactly is meant by that.

If I remove the Speedbox chip after some usage can Specialized detect there has been a Speedbox chip used in the past?

Is it likely that Specialized would introduce a software update that would disable to Speedbox chip ?

Finally I understand I can set the speed limit with the Speed box and will probably set it to the motors design speed capability of 28.8 mph but what is the maximum speed that it could be set to?

Thanks so much

Regards

Colin

What speedbox would I use for Specialized Vado SL 5.0 anyone?
I have just installed one on a Trek Allianz +7
Thanks in advance

I bought the Speedbox 3.0 tuning kit for my Specialized Como 3 650b 1.2 motor. It seems to work well however the display of the. Speed is not constant and alternates between 2 values constantly so I do not know how fast I drive. Also the distance traveled does not seem correct *about half the actual distance!
When I activate the speedbox the display indicates 99km but I can not adjust the speed as indicated in your instructions with —-+ then the only possible choices are 99km or 25km either on or off. In Canada the maximum speed allowed is 32 km!

Do you have a solution for me? Thank you
