The Ultimate Guide To Derestricting an eBike With a Yamaha Motor in 2024

In this blog post we're going to discuss how to derestrict eBikes with a Yamaha motors. We will run through the different options for all of the current models including the latest PW-X3 found on the flagship Haibikes. Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty and are only to be used on private land.

Important: none of the tuning kits we discuss below are compatible with YDX, Crossconnect or Urbanrush models.

How to find the correct tuning chip for my Yamaha motor?

Yamaha has been producing eBike motors since 2014. With nearly a dozen different versions it’s tricky to know exactly which motor your eBike has. We highly recommend looking at the specifications provided in your manual or a simple google search to find your specific model online.

The different motors can be put into 2 buckets:

PW-X, PW-X2, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE, PW-SE (typically found on eBikes produced from 2017-2022)

PW-X3 & PW-S2 (typically found on eBikes produced from 2022 onwards)

If you’ve already bought a 2023 model or are thinking about taking the leap, it’s highly likely your eBike will have either a PW-X3 or S2 motor. Both of these motors are considerably lighter than their predecessors (up to 300 grams). With the main difference being the power output. The X3 produces 85nm of torque which is in line with Bosch’s CX motor, whereas the PW-S2 has 75nm.

Now you’ve identified what motor you have, let’s dive in to our recommendations.

Best tuning kit for Yamaha PW-X, PW-X2, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE, PW-SE

VOLspeed V3 for Yamaha eBikes

We recommend this tuning kit as it allows you to easily set a new max speed limit on your ebike up to 45kmh. This is a brilliant feature as it keeps you in control of the speed and gives you flexibility as it can be adjusted at any time. This is a plug & ride tuning kit that will automatically switch off each time you turn your eBike off. It even gives you full use of your ebike’s display in mph or kmh.

One thing to note is that some installations may require the crank arm to be removed. This may require specialist tools and experience. After installing the chip, simply press the button sequence to set your new max speed limit (up to 45kmh).

It’s compatible with any of these motors; PW-X, PW-X2, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE, PW-SE.

The reason why we recommend the VOLspeed over the Speedbox is due to the latter having compatibility issues with the most recent firmware updates. The VOLspeed is fully tested on the most recent Yamaha firmware.

Best tuning kit for Yamaha PW-X3 or PW-S2

We recommend two options for these motors. Firstly, if your eBike has the Display A Side Switch (see below), we recommend the VOLspeed V3 PW-X3/S2.

Just like the version we discussed previously, this tuning kit gives you a custom derestriction up to 45kmh (28mph). It’s plug & ride and can be adjusted at any time using the buttons on the display. After installing the tuning kit, you’ll just need to press a short button sequence to activate the chip and set your max speed.

It’s compatible with any eBike with one of these motors; PW-X3 or PW-S2

If your eBike is fitted with Interface X, we recommend the Speedbox 3.1 instead. Whilst the VOLspeed is compatible with Interface X, due to it not having a display it can be tricky to set your custom max speed.

Unlike the VOLspeed, the Speedbox operates with a simple on/off derestriction. This makes it very user friendly with this particular controller. Once active, the Speedbox removes the factory speed limit entirely. The chip itself is installed directly to the motor. Once fitted, you simply press either your light button or Up/Down/Up/Down to activate it. The chip can be switched off at any time by pressing the same sequence again. The Speedbox 3.1 gives you a true plug & ride experience.

Alternatives

All of the tuning kits we’ve discussed require a connection to the motor. This can be tricky for some as can require specialist tools like a crank puller and some mechanical experience. If you have an older eBike (pre 2022) then it’s worth considering the BadassBox too.

BadassBox for Yamaha eBikes

The BadassBox Yamaha is clipped externally to the chainstay of the bike. These kits use magnets to alter the speed sensor and as a result, do not give you accurate speed/distance readings. Instead, they will increase the maximum speed on the eBike to approximately double (50kmh).

Please note that these are only compatible with eBikes that have a Yamaha motor and a speed sensor exactly like this one below

Does this affect my eBike’s warranty? It’s important to understand that installing a third party device onto your ebike can potentially void your warranty.

Hi I recently purchased a speedbox 3.1 for a pw x3 motor, it’s for a Yamaha Moro 7 and I’ve just read through one of your comments saying it doesn’t work with the Moro, could you correct me on this before I receive it and start trying to fit etc, as I’ll have to send back if it’s not compatible,
Thanks Luke

Hi, i have heard the speed box 1 for the bosch smart system can throw up a error, what happens if this error comes more than 3 times and the dealer cannot fix it with his diagnostics tool. Will bosch help or will they refuse to help if i purchase this and get the error more than 3 times?

Thanks
