How to Derestrict a TQ HPR Powered eBike | Trek Fuel EXe & Mondraker Neat Tuning Guide

TQ's HPR motors have quietly built a cult following. Nearly silent, impressively light and hidden so neatly in the frame that bikes like the Trek Fuel EXe barely look like eBikes at all — the HPR system is the benchmark for stealthy, natural-feeling assistance. But that refinement comes with the same catch as every eBike sold in the UK: a hard cut-off at 15.5mph.

Here's everything you need to know about derestricting a TQ HPR powered eBike — which bikes it covers, how the kit works, and what to check before you order.

Why is my TQ powered eBike limited to 15.5mph?

UK and EU regulations cap eBike motor assistance at 25km/h (15.5mph). The limit is enforced in software, not hardware — your HPR motor is capable of assisting well beyond it, but the assistance cuts out the moment you cross the threshold. On a lightweight bike that pedals as naturally as a Fuel EXe, that ceiling arrives constantly.

A tuning kit removes the restriction, so the motor keeps assisting all the way through your natural riding speed.

Important: a derestricted eBike is no longer road-legal in the UK or EU. Tuning kits are intended for use on private land and closed courses with the landowner's permission. Fitting one may also affect your bike's warranty. Please ride responsibly.

Which bikes does this cover?

One kit covers all three current TQ motors — HPR40, HPR50 and HPR60. You'll find them on:

  • Trek Fuel EXe (HPR50) and the lightweight Trek Slash+ / EXe family
  • Mondraker Neat (HPR50)
  • Scott Fastline and other Scott HPR models
  • A growing list of lightweight eMTBs and gravel/urban bikes running TQ's system

Check the marking on the motor casing near the cranks — it will read HPR40, HPR50 or HPR60. If you're unsure what's fitted to your bike, our Kit Finder will match you in 30 seconds.

The kit: SpeedBox 3.1 for TQ HPR

The SpeedBox 3.1 for TQ is our recommended tuning kit for every HPR motor. Once fitted and activated, it removes the 15.5mph factory limit completely — no speed cap. It comes with SpeedBox's lifetime warranty.

One thing to check before ordering

To activate and deactivate the tuning, your bike must have either the TQ HPR remote (with walk button) or +/- buttons to control the power level. Most HPR eMTBs have one of these fitted as standard. If your bike has neither, contact our support team before ordering and we'll advise.

How does it work once fitted?

Activation is done from your bike's own controls — no app or phone needed:

  • Switch tuning on/off: press the assistance mode buttons in the sequence ↑↓↑↓. The display briefly shows 99 KMH when active, 25 KMH when deactivated.
  • Set a custom speed limit: a simple button sequence lets you choose your own maximum, saved automatically.
  • We recommend switching the tuning on or off before you set off, not mid-ride.

Is it hard to install?

It's a moderate-difficulty install — the kit connects to the bike's display and motor, around an hour or two with basic tools for a home mechanic. Full wiring diagrams (including the separate HPR40 diagram — its wiring differs from the HPR50/60) and the complete install video are in our help centre:

A few things TQ owners should know

Ride at least 10km before activating if the kit is going on a brand-new bike.

Hold off on firmware updates once the kit is fitted — we don't recommend updating your eBike's software with tuning installed.

Switch off before service. Deactivate the tuning before any dealer visit, and remember the kit is fully removable if you ever want the bike back to standard.
