In this blog post we are going to review the Speedbox 1.1 tuning chip for Bosch Smart System eBikes. This tuning chip comes in two versions; Standard or B.Tuning, we will compare both, explain the differences and give you our recommendation.
Before we start, please note that removing the speed limit on your eBike can void your warranty, derestricted eBikes are illegal and only to be used on private land.
IMPORTANT: Currently there are no tuning kits available for Bosch Smart Bikes fitted with the Speed Sensor on the rear wheel valve (Bosch Rim Magnet).
If you own one of these, register your interest here and we'll keep you up to date with new product releases.
How to know if your eBike has a Bosch smart system?
If you are unsure whether your ebike has a Bosch Smart System, all you need to do is check your spec. If you see the spec below you have a Bosch Smart System, if your ebike has a Purion, Kiox or Intuvia display then you do not have the Bosch Smart System (check out our other post).
On the specifications you'll see the following;
1. LED Remote on the handlebar or System Controller & Mini Remote
2. Connected to Bosch Flow Smartphone App
3. Kiox 300 or Intuvia 100 Display (some models do not have displays)
Speedbox 1.1 Standard or B.Tuning?
The key difference between the two Speedbox 1.1’s is that the B.Tuning version has Bluetooth integrated. Both versions are fitted in the same way and offer the exact same performance, however, the B.Tuning has lots of other cool features which we will now discuss.
1. Set a new max on your ebike - this is an all new feature and only available on the bluetooth version. The standard version allows riders to remove the 25km/h limit only.
2. Enable invisible mode to prevent unauthorised use
3. Accurate ride data in real-time via the Speedbox app. Data is taken directly from the ebike motor
Will the Speedbox 1.1 harm my motor?
The Speedbox 1.1 for Bosch Smart System has been improved significantly since the original 1.0 was released in 2021. Speedbox were quick to address the reliability issues that plagued the 1.0 version.
Like all Speedbox tuning chips, this one is undetectable. What this means is that won’t appear on any reports if you were to take your ebike in for a service.
Riders can turn the Speedbox 1.1 off at any time using the LED controller or app (if using B.Tuning). When using your derestricted ebike on private land, you will find that it’s actually pretty difficult to reach excessive speeds unless you have a set of very fast feet, however 32-45km/h is achievable.
We haven’t had any reports of the Speedbox 1.1 causing excessive wear or damage to the motor.
If you’re concerned about this, we advise choosing the B.Tuning version due to the speed setting functionality.
Will the Bosch Smart System detect the Speedbox?
As mentioned above, both of these tuning chips are completely undetectable. Bosch have implemented anti-tuning detection on their ebike drive systems since 2020, this is why tuning chips like the Speedbox and VOLspeed have grown in popularity.
They offer a far more reliable solution compared to a few years ago when you could adjust the magnet slightly on your rear wheel to alter the speed limit.
The Speedbox is able to bypass the anti-tuning detection by running a short countdown at the end of your ride. This ensures that your ebike is recording the true distance and prevents skewed readings being sent to the computer - which will likely cause a tuning error.
Riders can minimise the risk of triggering an error by following these steps;
1. Only switch the Speedbox on/off before starting a ride. Not mid-ride
2. Keep average speed below 40kmh
3. Allow the bike to turn itself off once a ride is finished
Verdict
Speedbox have been manufacturing tuning chips for all of the major ebike motors for the last 5 years. All of their chips come with original connectors and meet high standards of quality control to give customers peace of mind - these ebikes are an expensive toy after all.
If you're looking for the most complete tuning chip for your Bosch Smart System ebike we highly recommend the SpeedBox 1.1 B.Tuning.
It’s slightly more expensive than the basic version, but we feel the additional features we discussed earlier present great value for money for riders.
If you're not too fussed about the speed setting feature or app integration, go for the standard SpeedBox 1.1. Performance-wise it's exactly the same, you just give up all the additional features.

Hi , I recently bought a speedbox 1.0 for Bosch second hand. I have a cube reaction hybrid pro 500 2022 model. It has the purion display ,and I’m 95% sure it’s not a smart system. When I went to fit it the other day it has different type of plugs to my bike. Bike has square plugs speedbox has round. Any ideas lol 🤣

Hi Steve. The Speedbox 1.0 is designed for the new Bosch Smart System motor. Since your bike has a standard motor, it’s not compatible. We recommend the VOLspeed V4 chip for your bike. It’s our bestseller for bosch non-smart system motors. You can order here: https://ebiketuner.com/products/volspeed-v4-bosch-ebike-tuning-kit
You alright mate I’ve got a cube reaction 2023 640 it’s a gen3 smart system with a purion 200 screen would a Bosch speed box 1.0 fit in it ?
